It began, more than 20 years ago, as a very deliberate formula for pop success. Manchester entrepreneur Nigel Martin Smith modelled his all singing, all dancing boy band on 1980s American heart throbs New Kids on the Block. And the boys he picked were Gary Barlow, a Frodsham lad who had cut his teeth playing the hits of Barry Manilow on the club circuit, Oldhamer Mark Owen, break dancing Mancunians Howard Donald and Jason Orange, and the joker in the pack, Robbie Williams from Stoke on Trent. Teen magazines latched on to the band, and the first glimmerings of Take That mania came when 1,000 youngsters surged forward at a gig in Coco Savannas nightclub in Stockport. Five fans were treated for crush injuries. Soon there was a determined army of fans across Europe, staking out hotels when Take That toured and travelling to band members' homes. But five became four when Robbie frustrated by the regime left the band during tour rehearsals in 1995. But in February 1996, a press conference was convened at the Hilton International Hotel at Manchester Airport, at which Gary declared: "The rumours are true.'' Take That were to split. Gary, Howard and Mark all became fathers. Only Robbie continued to fill the arenas as a solo artist, usually with songs which told us how unhappy he was, sneering at his boy band past. Gary had teasingly suggested at that press conference in 1996: "My dream is that after five to 10 years we could come back and do it all again." Few took him seriously. Boy bands grew up, and that was that. And yet there was enormous interest when, in 2005, the foursome reunited for a greatest hits album, an ITV documentary and then a tour. Take That had left on a high in 1996, and managed to return on a high. The 2008 album The Circus was even more rapturously received, and was followed by one of the most spectacular stage shows pop has ever known. The speculation about Robbie's return continued, though the fear now was not that Robbie was too big for Take That, but that it would look as if he was cashing in on the foursome's rising stock. But last summer it was announced that Robbie was back in the fold, and a new album, Progress, was in the offing. It became the fastest selling album of the century, just as the reunion tour became the fastest selling ever, with over 1.1m tickets sold on the first day alone. Twenty years after they came to fame, three of them now in their 40s, the "boy" band Take That are bigger than ever. Taxi 12s,A new smartphone game developed by two Britons, one an award winning novelist, with funds raised by crowd sourcing and no budget for marketing, has become the world's highest grossing health and fitness app during its first fortnight of release, beating even such giants as Nike.Released just weeks ago, Zombies, Run! describes itself as "an ultra immersive running game for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and Android" with a narrative edge.Instead of focusing on fitness, it casts the user as the struggling survivor of a zombie apocalypse. Players undertake sorties to gather supplies, with the drama playing out in fully scripted audio; success is measured in further segments of the unfolding story.Sales are expected to top ($194,000) soon, despite the full version costing more than and media specialists say the game's success has many lessons for the industry.Alderman says their inspiration was a "learning how to run" course she took last year. "At the start of the course the instructors asked us why we wanted to learn to run. Most people talked about getting fitter, but one woman answered 'to escape the zombie horde'!"The idea stuck and, when Hon told her about his ambition to develop a fitness app that "made the actual act of running itself fun", Zombies was born.Crucially, the pair decided that rather than truing to raise funds from a conventional investor or games company, they would use the website Kickstarter to crowd source their budget. A three minute video pitching the game was uploaded to the site last September and swiftly captured the internet's imagination. Pledged funding of US$73,000 ($89,000) from 3464 donors poured in more than five times the initial target as well as more than 30,000 "likes" on Facebook. They raised their money and ensured the project's viability. The lesson seems to be: give people something fresh, gripping and alive to play to its audience's interests, and they'll not only pay a premium price, they'll pay up front for you to make it.
Real Womens Taxi 12s,Grape 5s I was flipping through a magazine a few months ago and saw an ad for Uggs (you know, those big sheepskin boots that became the ubiquitous footwear of Hollywood starlets a few years ago). But the model in this particular Uggs ad, instead of being shod in big clunky boots, was lounging across the page in big clunky sandals. I remember this moment, because it was the definitive statement that Uggs were now, finally When a trendy company has to branch into new markets to maintain its profits, you know that trend is over. And that what Uggs just did, move beyond the fluffy bootie into footwear. The Ugg is dead. Long live the shoe. You may own a pair of Crocs. I been told they quite comfortable. But they stock price has just announced that your squishy neon colored clogs are, like their sheepskin friends over at Uggs, last year. its competition from $5 Wal Mart (NYSE:WMT) knock offs (after all, Crocs did make the mistake of going after the comfort demographic instead of the label conscious one. Spoiled teenagers in California care who makes their shoes, but underpaid parents in Oregon don really check.). Or perhaps people just got tired of wearing tires on their feet. Either way, Crocs are over. And the company earnings and stock price have stated as much. CROX hit a high of $75.21 last October, but Friday the stock fell as low as $4.72, when the company announced even more abysmal guidance for its second quarter results. Crocs now thinks it will make profits of about 3 7 cents per share, from an earlier estimate of 42 47 cents per share. That gotta sting. Supposedly, Crocs is launching a clothing line to make more money. I looking forward to seeing what kind of overall fashion sense informs a pair of rubber shoes. Perhaps, they embrace the esthetic, and we all be wearing bright squishy pants by next year. Hmm. That would make my laundry bills much lower.
