What we need to understand is that these men arrive in this country with literally the clothes they are wearing and an overnight bag. They have rarely been exposed to major publicity, sponsorship, contracts and the like so what they have is ALL they have. To add insult to injury the Kenyan Shilling is not accepted in South Africa so even the small amount of cash they traveled with, is completely useless. They will scrimp and save to get the fare together to attend a race if they are fortunate enough they will come across a man such as Craig, who as an agent and manager is second to none in this country. Believe you me, if there is financial gain for a Professional Sports Managing Athletics Agent I have yet to see it. These athletes approached Craig, with a view to him managing them, hopefully arranging a few races for them, sponsorships and the like. Let me introduce you to Lameck, Thomas, Jacob, Hilary, Philemon, Amos, Duncan and John all elite professional athletes from Kenya all in South Africa currently all winning races every single week end, while building up to a few big marathons later on this month and during November. Oh! did I mention that they are, for the duration of their stay in South Africa, my extended family and our responsibility? We now have a family of 13. The aforementioned club reneged on the written contract before consummating it leaving Craig and myself to quickly make alternative "permanent" arrangements to ensure that no criteria of the Athletics Federations of both countries' requirements were violated and that indeed the men were taken care of in such a manner that is expected and which was promised. I was ready to chalk this story up as another example of parent shaming, but this is really an altercation that happened between two women while children were watching. I think the cops over reacted and Danielle Wolf should not have been arrested, but I also feel like some degree of intervention was appropriate given the facts presented. People think it totally acceptable to go grocery shopping in pajamas while swearing up a storm and talking about how drunk they got on their cellphone. This is the new norm and I can stand it. I sick and tired of worrying my kid will overhear someone swearing and start repeating those words. Because lets be honest, when my kid drops the F bomb in the bread aisle people will be looking at me, the parent. They will not believe that my kid heard these words from perfect strangers at Target. Nor will they care to stick around to hear my explanation. I also lived someplace that had laws against public swearing. I actually knew someone who went to prison for giving someone the middle finger while at the beach. I forget what the exact sentence is but it either a fine (I want to say more than a thousand dollars) or 40 days in prison. He couldn pay the fine, so he was forced to do the time. And you know what, I okay with that. Because when you trying to have a nice family day out, you don want to have to worry about fully grown men who behave like animals and scare those around them with their violent language and gestures. And I don really care if it deemed a waste of police time. Because in my opinion it not. You arrest a few people for such behavior and soon people realize you can behave however you like when you leave your house. There are standards of behavior you be expected to adhere to. It also encourages those who want to argue to rethink their behavior, to calm down and walk away. As opposed to letting things escalate. And in that way, it saves police time in the long run.
